Back when the Feigins (now teenage) sons were much younger, Lasry suspected that Peter or Dan would give them a secret signal to scamper onto the floor if their team was losing. So, I don't think uncommon to probably everybody and certainly every leader, everybody who has a real responsibility, the last 12 months were like nothing we could have ever imagined, we could have ever thought about and really reacted to. Youve got Wes Edens who has probably started up dozens of companies in private equity and has an unbelievable kind of entrepreneurial spirit. Where does your ring sit? People will ask me all the time like, "How would you respond these times, Mike, as a player?" Even though we just opened up a building two years ago, you're starting in a place where we're going to have some attrition and lose some fans and have to build equity back up and get back to basics of like building ticket sales, building everything else. That was one of these monumental, incredible, awesome times to get it done. As commissioner of one of New York Citys longstanding pickup basketball games, Dan Feigin always knew where he would be every Saturday morning: inside the subterranean gymnasium at Trevor Day School in Manhattan, where he has worked for nearly three decades as a teacher, coach and administrator. "Scott Walker was just at the beginning of a presidential campaign. I think if I had kind of the listening skills that I still need to get better at, I would be better at kind of understanding. I would say again, from our owners, from day one, they understood that from how are we stewards of the brand of the Bucks and how are we examples in the community? It was like kind of so much fun and learning so much and kind of being on teams with really diverse people all around the league and around different teams. Thomas F. Leonard . I think it starts with human capital, but it really starts with road mapping out each little thing. Above me there are my two children, my son, Tyler, my daughter, Courtney. Were going to appreciate the hell out of you. Michael Red: So, the league, obviously, is halted with COVID and then in the middle of all of that, you have the George Floyd issue. Michael Red: Peter Feigin. Our dinner table conversation. Hows Warren Buffett in person as, how exactly? Because are they getting too sophisticated too early in terms of their value enterprise? Kind of surreal. But talk about that dynamic leading through that. What people never tell you about the rings, its not just the 20 rings for the players and the coach and the owners. We got to like we want to use our platform to affect change and change the world. You start and now talk about the major, like you said, you got a great human capital person, you got a great CFO. Peter Feigin: Yeah, I don't know if it's still risk. But that kind of thing. John: No question. And that's what we try to do. A lot of fun. But the overarching is how do we maintain kind of championship caliber excellence, like across the business and across the team. I can't even imagine what these guys are going through.". This is all a good launch point for Feigin to introduce a state-of-the-art arena. John: Right. In all, about 100 players have played in The Run over the decades, some more luminous than others. Now, he's the chair of the 2017 Greater Milwaukee Heart & Stroke Walk/5K Run, which is Sunday at Veterans Park . He simplified the housing market for me. We've gotten through conversations. So, we continue to want to make this a place where players are like, "Shit, I've never been treated like this.". Our expectation is to win a championship. I've known Jon for, I don't know, 13, 14 years, and to see what he's done with the team as the general manager has been really impressive. But his primary challenge is to build a bridge from that world to the real world that includes a home town that is torn by strife and economic stress and forge a connection with a state that has distanced itself from the . And also, obviously some additions with Jrue Holiday and other great players we have this year. I played soccer and basketball, not overly blessed with athleticism. It just kind of really trying. Yes, we are shiny toy people want to see how you build a project in time and under budget and how youd manage a project. But the best way to talk about is like I'd rather throw the pass than hit the shot. From 2006-2014, the Bucks only made the postseason twice in eight seasons. I understood what a call to action was. Sometimes it goes up for judicial review to make sure the run is harmonious, Lee said. This is COVID, how do we do it? During a media car wash in NYC in December, Feigin opts for a sweater, not a suit and tie. The Runs roots date to the early 1980s, when Lee became childhood friends with the Feigin brothers. They cause matchup problems for their fathers friends. Being able to play ball with your son is kind of like the best of the best, Peter Feigin said. Why shouldn't we resemble the city we work and live in, instead of kind of what national things are? John: By the way, weve got with us today, Peter Feigin, hes the president of the Milwaukee Bucks. And if a new player does not endear himself to the group, it tends to reflect poorly on whoever invited him in the first place. Thats for every aspect of it. Thats what we call our volunteering. How we build our brand and how we build our awareness and likability around that, it's just kind of one of those no-brainers, too. You start with whats the goal? Really surprised the 15 largest companies aren't following our lead and kind of like, "Where are they?" And at the core, I've always been a sales and marketing guy. So, it's really about cost containment and preservation of jobs. Hes with us today. It is so important that kind of at least in our infrastructure. You serve as like a mentor to them as well. And then kind of understanding that he knew I was kind of keen on the operation side and understood a team and an organization's P&L for a good way. They all had the space, they're at Disney, they have all the amenities. Talk about that as far as the league and the individual teams. Because I don't think we're really worried about kind of like we would think half a million people are going to die, that what would happen to hospitals and ICUs and things like that. Going back into the past is something I wanted to ask you about. He wanted to keep the team, which was a big catalyst for the whole movement.". Antetokounmpo signed a four-year, $100 million extension in September 2016 (right before his first All-Star season) that will keep him under contract in Milwaukee through 2020-21. Talk about that. And I think the balance is really, really tough because you know what an NBA season is. Do you want to open a sports book? I think if nothing else, it changes the awareness, the sophistication, and the business operations of the way players will position themselves and the way theyll market themselves. How do you care about it, and Jon Horst is so great on the basketball side. And I obviously was kind of like I call myself the Division 3 dream. John: Talking about teaching, we have 15 years of this podcast, so we have thousands of young people around the world that actually tune in and listen and when we have someone like you on, Id like to ask you this. In many ways, you were doing a startup when you came to Milwaukee with your partners. Peter: Which people gave. Why wouldn't you embrace Michael Red to really be a reflection of our franchise in such a great way because it's kind of what the great teams and brands do around the world is we've got this unbelievable legacy, which, you're a part of. Maybe I'm biased, but knowing you and seeing what you've done with the Bucks. Hes very straightforward. Its kind of like the unwritten rule: Dont argue about anything. I guarantee you'll find motivation and guidance from this remarkable man. Peter: How do we envision the next day? Peter Feigin: No. You didnt study sports. And how do we capture that, both digitally and on broadcast? There's always joking, a lot of joking and the team, the organization from what I've heard and know of you is that they really, really, really appreciate your leadership within the organization. I think weve gravitated again with a lot of people weve brought in to engage and get it done. We closed our restaurants down. And probably about 15 years ago, Mark Lazari was looking to explore buying teams and they were in a parent conference, and my brother just said to him, Hey, my twin brothers over at Madison Square Garden he runs the marketing there he understands the P&L you probably get a kick out of him coming with you and giving you an opinion on what that was. Make a long story short, we probably spent the next 10 years having the most incredible adventures of going to do due diligence on teams that he was prospecting to buy. But while it is nice to connect, Kearns described the calls as artificial sweetener. It is not the same. His sabbatical included a lengthy stint in Los Angeles on the set of Space Jam 2. I became the president of the company for a number of years, and then we got absorbed by NetJets and took on that role at NetJets for a couple of years, and really learned incredibly, had this opportunity to learn P&L and operational. And nobody's going to question how great Milwaukee is." Well, you know about the ice cream truck. He's the president of the Milwaukee Bucks and he's a native New Yorker. I mean, I probably publicly spoke for the first time in my life 100 times in the first 200 days to everybody from Lions Clubs to the barber shop, to the Boy Scouts and the Girl Scouts to kind of preach how big a deal it is for city this size to have and keep an NBA team. Peter Feigin: Yeah. How could it be?" This is a super special edition. Im not a big fan of, hey, we need to make money or consult off that. You miss throwing that pass. Okay. How did you put the stadium deal together? How does that, and then, with that also because this harkens back, Im old enough, youre old enough even, we remember the Michael Jordan era, he was the greatest player in the world back in his Again, you not only have one of the greatest players ever to play on the planet, but youve also created this culture of retention. Talk a little bit about where you even grew up, how you even got here. Nobody ever thought it would be a year shutdown, but our owners are kind of incredible people, who want to see a plan, who want to see a recommendation and want to go forward. "It's going to be a blow-away experience beyond expectations for anybody that's been to a pro sporting event in the state of Wisconsin, that's for sure," Feigin says. Just shut up for 15 seconds. Its gotten through its first iteration to see where it is. And we'll get to social injustice in a bit. Peter Feigin: And you've got to put with everything going on in the world, there's got to be that balance of like, "Hey, there are priorities." John: Yeah. Peter: Hes was in consumer products. Right? I never wanted to be that guy with the goggles and the knee brace and the tucked-in shirt being like, Hey! John: Lets step back. Peter: Yeah, so I think its here and I think its all about the customization, right. Those are simple, its his genius. "Why would we wait till tomorrow when we can get it done today?" How does that boat go? So I'm never a great example of where the balance is and what the cut off is in everything because it's all one big puzzle to me. That was the real mad man era that your mom was in at Grey Advertising, right? And we sat down as organization with the players, with the owners, with the executives and just said like, "Oh, we're going to double down." And I think we find it like it's a responsibility where we can set the example and we can innovate and then we can shout it from the mountaintops. Youre physically building an arena, a district, a template for success. I actually read a whole story, theres a whole article, Peter, about your ring. Whether youre building an arena, whether youre building infrastructure or a team, whether youre dealing with the same problems, it is really powerful to end up with, when you come up with conflict and problems or you need solutions, or you need smart brains to be able to pick up the phone with 5, 10 like-minded people who are dealing with the same stuff. Feigin distributed the shirts in February to The Runs regulars during a weekend retreat to Milwaukee, where his twin brother, Peter, works as the president of the Bucks. I'm so honored, man, to have you on the podcast. Thats just what a joy. What would you be doing if you just couldnt be doing this? And the task at hand here is like the more successful we are on the court, the more successful we are on the business, the more opportunity we will have to do other things. But usually, The Run comprises a core group of 15 to 20 players who range from 16 to 58 years old. Why dont we build the tenders business and leverage the Bucks brand and leverage like wereLow and behold, were up to two, almost going to get three locations on the Cream City Cluckery and its like a chicken tender business of which weve done relatively well. This years edition comes stamped with the Roman numeral XXVIII, to commemorate the games 28 years of existence. Peter Feigin: It was, I don't know a better way to say it other than, grassroots. Talk about all the nuances and the dynamics and the pressure was to lead through COVID. It was, like you couldn't even, if you had a thousand scenarios, of what the last year could be for the Milwaukee Bucks and what you're kind of thinking about and dealing with, it's just been a pretty incredible ride and ton of emotion. John: You grew up on the Upper East Side, you are a native New Yorker, your brothers still back there. The first kind of fully owned African American sports agency, whose main client was Arthur Ashe. Talk about that relationship that you have with the players. We built an infrastructure, to our owners' credit on, they made it really simple. Every Wednesday, Dan Feigin, now the director of Trevors Upper School on the Upper East Side, sends a mass email to determine who will be playing that weekend. I think one of the things Jason of Beverly Hills, who was the designer and the manufacturer did, we just had this awesome element that the top of the ring came off and became a pendant on your, that you could actually wear as a necklace. You know what I mean? And again, it's kind of the relationship. Whats going on with technology whats going on, even with your experience in the arena. Peter: Obviously, we have like, all of them are employee resource groups. I think it changes the landscape. It has huge value and its paid huge returns for us. But this is literally a business based on humans and psychology and emotion and how we feel every day. And then I think on a parallel track, youre really building an infrastructure. Now just, we've talked about your background. If you lose, that might mean you need to keep an eye on several of your friends toddlers. You cant imagine. Everybody knows everybody. John: Unbelievable. This again becomes a platform of an NBA brand extension that just explodes with engagement. How do we affect the community together? Those are all things that are kind of seemed simple, but not done all the time. The Paul's, who acted in several other films including Double Trouble (1992), and The Road Raiders (1989), quickly became well known in the bodybuilding community for their great strength and power, as well as their rebellious barbarian attitude. It would be fun to own a hundred McDonalds franchises and you guys would be great at that. Last year, he was sidelined for several months while he recovered from an eye injury he had sustained in The Run. Well, that's you. Because there's a lot of founders and entrepreneurs that listen to this as well and managing that dynamic with their family. Peter: Probably, now with the way interesting curriculum has expanded and fun case studies and like where schools are. How do you rethink it for broadcast, for social, for everything to really appeal to the world in a whole different way? That's like, that's today's kind of like, "What are we focused on?". Peter Feigin: And you create this really confusing, frustrating, challenging environment that, Mike, when you were playing, maybe you had a few performance psychologist. I thought Id hit the jackpot, Feigin said. Talk about that balance between what you do with Milwaukee and obviously, with your family, right? Peter Feigin Title: President Organization: Milwaukee Bucks Previous experience: Chief marketing and revenue officer of Deluxe Entertainment Services Group; president and chief operating. On the team, it takes extreme like investment to keep it. Feigin's first task was evident right away. And they were kind of stuck at the last minute deep in the summer. So, I can't be too vocal, because if the owners knew how valuable it was that, I conceptually run a retail operation with thousands of pieces of apparel. If someone kills you, theyll give you the ball, Dan Feigin said. Feigin's twin brother, Daniel, is director of the upper school at New York City's Trevor Day. Talk a little bit on a fun topic, when I was reading up about you and the team and everything else, I read about this new venture you guys got going over in Wisconsin called the Cluckery and I got hungry looking at the website and looking at the menu. Peter: So my ring sits in my underwear drawer in our house which is like, great and its got readily accessibleI mean its huge. And have you seen that shift a little bit in the city since Milwaukee is kind of spearheading that, the Bucks? What a great thing. He perpetuates a culture that attracts like-minded people to him. Its really important and youve got to take a real responsibility. Peter: which I cant even believe it, Id probably have some fun teaching. And you immediately go into, "What does this look like? Michael Red: I don't know if that's the responsibility of the organization to have that permeate throughout the city, but have you seen a shift in Milwaukee, even when it comes to people coming together from different races and different creeds? And from your perspective, how was the bubble? Peter Feigin: So, my job is pretty simple, like how do I build the trust with them? This is why you go to Parents' Night, folks. MILWAUKEE Bucks President Peter Feigin helped lead the team to its first championship in 50 years, and now he has the . And we thought we were in a place and we're nowhere close to how good we can be or how we can use this NBA platform and our players and our organization to help change the community, to help change our performance as a team, and to be better citizens. Thats a good run. Peter Feigin: This is where I want to be. John: Hey, Peter. It's about doing things for the right reasons. She is like, "We're in this together." Peter: Yeah.
